What
Are Die Varieties?
Die Errors:
CUD, Major
Die Break |

|
|
The major die break or cud is the a widely collected die
error type. They are known for most dates and mints,
though not all. |
|
|
|
This cud is known as an
atheist
cud because it blocks
out part of the motto, IN GOD WE TRUST. Some
collectors collect only
atheist
cuds. Others collect
them all. |

This is a interesting cud on the reverse of
a 1955-S cent. Notice the mark under OF AM of AMERICA
and the massive
cap
on Lincoln. The part of the
reverse die which broke away remained in the coining chamber
and was struck by the obverse die. The resulting
damage can be seen on this cent. |
